"I am struck by how oddly funny and scary [Crocker's] work is--edgy in the very best way, like if Stephen King had Raymond Carver's heart and ear for music."--Laura Kasischke, author of Suspicious River

Before Fall (1970)

Momma tucked my long blonde hair into a black sailor's cap.  My father had worn it when he was a young man; it smelled of mud.   My brother, Will, had gotten himself dressed.  His cap, also my fathers,  was identical to mine and from a time we would never know.  Our clothes were as dark as the midnight sky just outside the picture window in our living room.  It was Saturday night and somehow, once again, the neighbors had made Momma very mad.
